City Light Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kevin Griffiths - KKL Luzern Concert Hall

Program Info:
John Barry - Dances with Wolves

With "Dances with Wolves," Kevin Costner created a masterpiece in 1990 that won seven Oscars – including "Best Picture" and "Best Original Score." The live world premiere in March 2025 at the KKL Lucerne was an overwhelming concert event, celebrated with standing ovations by over 4,000 attendees . Experience the Western epic in all its majesty live with the City Light Symphony Orchestra in the KKL concert hall!

Thirty-five years ago, Kevin Costner made film history with "Dances with Wolves." No Hollywood studio believed in the success of this Western drama about the decline of the Old West, but Costner was undeterred. He put up money from his own pocket, and when he couldn't find a director for the film, he promptly sat in the director's chair himself, delivering his impressive directorial debut with "Dances with Wolves." The result was a surprise box office hit, and with its breathtakingly beautiful images, sensitive narrative, historical and cultural accuracy, and John Barry's dreamlike score, the three-hour epic "Dances with Wolves" captivated millions of moviegoers, garnering critical acclaim and numerous awards.

The story begins in 1863 in a hospital near a battlefield in Tennessee. The Civil War rages, and Union Lieutenant John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) is among the countless wounded. His leg is scheduled to be amputated, but he sneaks out of the hospital, intending instead to meet certain death on the battlefield.

But through a twist of fate, Dunbar helps the Unionists to victory and is celebrated as a hero. Under these circumstances, he receives priority medical treatment, which saves his leg. He is also allowed to choose his next deployment, and so John Dunbar chooses Fort Sedgewick, an outpost in frontier and Indian country. Once there, he is immersed in a world unknown to him. In solitude, he undertakes extensive forays, where he soon realizes that a wolf is watching him closely. He also encounters the Sioux and Pawnee Indians.

Composer John Barry read the script and immediately agreed. Barry: "War-disabled John Dunbar learns about the beauty of nature and the dignity of the Sioux Indians in the frontier. This is what my music portrays." Barry's distinctively thematic score overwhelms with grand symphonic music and heartbreaking intimacy at the same time. He succeeds in creating both heroism and a melancholy swan song for the Old West. "Dances With Wolves" is John Barry's magnum opus, and he rightfully won his fifth Oscar for it.

Let John Barry's music, performed by the City Light Symphony Orchestra, transport you to the vastness of the West and experience the masterpiece "Dances With Wolves" in new splendor.
