A Night of Symphonic Dances
City Light Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kevin Griffiths - KKL Luzern

Program Info:
Bolero, fandango, mambo, and many more! To close out the season and kick off the summer with a thrilling performance, the City Light Symphony Orchestra ignites a veritable firework display of timbres and rhythms with "A Night of Symphonic Dances."

The Spanish Dance by Manuel de Falla opens a colourful round of sounds, followed by the Spanish-Moorish-inspired Danse Bacchanale by Camille Saint-Saëns.

The central work of the first part of the concert is a classic of the symphonic repertoire: Maurice Ravel's hypnotic Boléro . This is followed by an equally electrifying contrast with Irish-Celtic music from Bill Whelan's "Riverdance."

The second part of the concert will feature a veritable "best of" pan-American music: With "West Side Story," Leonard Bernstein created not only one of the most famous musicals of all time, but also a musical monument of the 20th century. Following the musical's overwhelming success on Broadway, Bernstein arranged several numbers from the musical as a suite for orchestra entitled "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story."

In Fandango for solo violin and orchestra, the Mexican composer Alfredo Marques celebrates beguilingly beautiful timbres, before the rousing concert suite from the ballet "Estancia" by the Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera resounds as the grand finale.

The City Light Symphony Orchestra is pleased to present this program to get you in the mood for what we hope will be a lively and energetic summer!
