Program Info: Charles Chaplin - City Lights
A tramp falls in love with a blind flower girl. Due to a mix-up, she mistakes him for a rich man. Only an expensive treatment can restore the flower girl's eyesight - and so the tramp does everything he can to get the necessary money... With the production of the tragicomedy "Lights of the Big City" in 1931, Charlie Chaplin took a big risk: since 1927, the sound film has started his unstoppable triumph, but Chaplin maintains the pantomimic art he has in the figure of the clumsy and virtuoso Tramp has brought unsurpassed mastery, is incompatible with spoken language. The coup was successful and the film became one of his greatest successes. The merciless perfectionist left nothing to chance - and also composed the music for the film himself for the first time. The "Lights of the Big City" with a live soundtrack played by the National Theater Orchestra transform the OPAL into a veritable film palace!
