Program Info: Tartuff (Holdup) by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau (1925) with live orchestral music by Giuseppe Becce (Detlev Glanert)
In this silent film classic, a wealthy old man is seemingly lovingly cared for by his housekeeper. But she has her sights set on his fortune and begins to poison him. Ultimately, it is a film within a film - a parable about the hypocrite Tartüff - that plays a key role in saving the old man. The music - reconstructed, orchestrated and arranged by Detlev Glanert - characterises greed in an impressively torturous way, among other things, through the extensive use of excessive chords. Giuseppe Becce's work is of great importance for the development of cinema music as a whole; But especially in German silent films, his talent was greeted with a kiss.
