14 May 2025 Monte-Carlo (Monaco)
Peter and the Wolf & The Story of the Pope and his Servant Balda
Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo conducted by Philippe Béran - Auditorium Rainier III, Monaco
Program Info: The Russian repertoire is full of extraordinary tales, some world-famous like Peter and the Wolf by the composer Serge Prokofiev and others completely unknown like The Story of the Pope and his Servant Balda , by the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.
This extravagant tale gave rise to brilliant music composed in 1933 by Dmitri Shostakovich – whose 50th anniversary we are celebrating this year th anniversary of the death – to accompany… a cartoon!
If you want to discover the secret of the servant Balda, who manages to make the devils pay tribute to confuse a wicked, abusive and miserly priest, and if you want to rediscover Peter and the Wolf in the exceptional theatrical version by the actor Joan Mompart, then this concert is for you!
Program:
Dmitri Shostakovich - The History of the Pope and his Servant Balda, Suite, op. 36a, This score was intended to accompany a full-length cartoon-film, based on one of the classics of Russian children’s literature, a comic fairy-tale by Pushkin, a version of the familiar story of the ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’, but the cartoon-film was never completed.
