Chaplin: City Lights / Lichter der Großstadt
ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien conducted by Timothy Brock - Wiener Konzerthaus, Großer Saal
Program Info: Film “City Lights” (Director: Charles Chaplin, USA 1931)
Charles Chaplin Music for “City Lights / Lights of the Big City” (director: Charles Chaplin, USA 1931) (1929–1931)
“An ironic and socially critical tragicomedy full of humanity, goodness and optimism,” is what the lexicon of international films says about “City Lights” (1931) – one of Charlie Chaplin’s greatest masterpieces. Although sound films had been on the rise since “The Jazz Singer” (1927), Chaplin was initially skeptical about the “talkies” phenomenon. As is well known, the film medium was never silent per se: film music was always an important component and a guarantee for its success. Charlie Chaplin was well aware of their impact. Music was his passion, and even without in-depth training he had an unerring feeling for precise phrasing, tempos and effects. With "City Lights" he was also responsible for the film music for the first time: When the tramp falls in love with a blind flower seller, who in turn thinks he is a millionaire, a successful mixture of jazz, waltz, mambo and borrowings from 19th century music is heard . At the performance of the film jewel in the Vienna Konzerthaus, none other than Chaplin specialist Timothy Brock will be at the podium of the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna.
