Karel Svoboda (1938-2007) played the piano since childhood, after graduation he started studying medicine, where he played with the Dixieland of Medics, then he interrupted his studies and started playing professionally in cafes and various orchestras, in 1962 he founded his own instrumental group Mefisto. In 1965, he got a job as a musician at the Rokoko Theater, where he soon began to apply himself as an inventive composer. Over time, he developed into the most successful composer of our popular music, his creative melodies were characterised by ingeniously simple musical motifs and strong choruses.

In the following years, Svoboda composed film and television melodies for various genres, most notably the musical Romance for a Crown (1975), where Svoboda's songs were sung by Karel Gott, Helena Vondráčková and Jiří Schelinger. Jiří Schelinger also sang the title song for the popular comedy COŽ TAKHLE DÁT SI SPENÁT (1977), Helena Vondráčková then sang in the fairy tale JAK SE BUDÍ PRINCEZNY (1977). Meanwhile, Karel Svoboda celebrated extraordinary success in Germany with the theme song for the animated series VČELKA MÁJA (1976). The approached Karel Gott was initially reluctant to sing the song for the children's series, but in the end he is successful with it in Germany to this day, later he sang the Czech version as well as some other foreign language versions. Also in the following years, Svoboda often composed in Germany, and his music can be heard in a number of German films and series, his song Two Hearts for the series BIG MAN was sung by Suzi Quatro. In the 1980s, Svoboda began to compose more for television series, his inventive music was an important component in, for example, the series VISITORS (1984), CRIMINAL ADVENTURES (1989), and last but not least, HUMBERTO'S CIRCUS (1988), from which he chose two melodic motifs for Karel Gott singing again. He also continued to compose for fairy tales, for example the Slovak fairy tale SŮL NAD ZLATO (1982), and more recently Z PEKLA ŠTĚSTÍ (1999), where the song of the same name was sung by Karel Gott; it was one of the last acts of their collaboration. Karel Svoboda's last work was the music for the movie LOVERS AND MURDERERS (2004; singing by Leona Machálková) and the TV series RODINÁ POUTA (2005; singing by Bohuš Matuš).
