City Lights - Film and music by Charles Chaplin
National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia conducted by Vladimir Spivakov - Moscow International Performing Arts Center, Svetlanovsky Hall

Program Info:
Charles Chaplin - City Lights

The screening of one of the most famous films of silent cinema - the film "City Lights", in which Charlie Chaplin first acted as a composer, will take place in the Svetlanov Hall of the House of Music. The film will be shown live with the Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Vladimir Spivakov.

“City Lights” is a famous silent film by Charlie Chaplin, shot in 1931, when directors had already begun working on sound films. In this film, Chaplin traditionally performed in several roles - as a screenwriter, director, leading actor, producer, choreographer and, for the first time, as a composer. The film still ranks first among the 10 best romantic comedies according to the American Film Institute.

The music for the film was orchestrated and arranged by Arthur Johnston and Alfred Newman, but Chaplin himself carefully analysed the score and made adjustments. “I needed graceful, romantic music that would contrast with the image of the tramp and give emotional depth to my comedies,” he said. “Music should not compete with me, but serve as a counterpoint to grace and charm in the film, expressing feelings...” (Charlie Chaplin).

“Chaplin is a great poet who deeply penetrated into the essence of human nature,” says Vladimir Spivakov. – He appeals to the best sides of our soul. He was a man who understood well that we are all on the edge of an abyss and that human life is a memory of one fleeting day spent as a guest. Chaplin showed us the fragility of human life... He showed us that we need to believe and hope and that real feeling can overcome many things.”
