Victor Hugo's novel about the hunchbacked Quasimodo and the gypsy girl Esmeralda who fall victim to lust and a power struggle with the Paris cathedral as the scene, has been made into a film many times. Wallace Worsley's 1923 version is undoubtedly the first. Lon Chaney, who plays the lead role, achieved stardom through this film which also set a standard for later horror films.
