Program Info:
Live music for the original pre-war Polish film "Bestia".

Pola Negri, the most famous Polish actress of all time, the tragic story of a love triangle brought to the screen in 1917, and excellent musicians specialising in creating new music for silent films - this is our proposal to end this Sunday afternoon in May.

Aleksander Hertz's film is the oldest and only preserved film with Pola Negri, from the period when the actress was still playing in Poland. Let us recall that the artist ended her career with the status of an undisputed Hollywood legend. The version of the film presented during the event is the latest work of the National Film Archive - Audio-visual Institute, which digitally restored the image.

The Beast is a tragic story of a love triangle. The heroine, who comes from the provinces, takes advantage of a countryman who falls in love with her and runs away from home. She goes to a big city, where she becomes a famous dancer and meets a wealthy entrepreneur. Soon, however, an angry provincial admirer appears in that city, this time with only one goal in mind - revenge.

Pola Negri is the most famous Polish actress in the world, who started on the stage of Polish theatres and on small film sets, and after the success of the film The Beast , she moved to the German cinematography market and finally landed in Hollywood. All this happened during a difficult period when silent films were being abandoned in favor of cinema with sound. Great talent and a lot of work allowed the actress to become a pioneer of modern cinema and an undisputed Hollywood legend, appearing on screen in the 1960s.

The soundtrack for the film will be provided by the Czerwie band, representing the leading Polish groups playing live music for silent films. The artists are also creators and performers of music for many theatre plays, documentaries and feature films. The band has five original albums in its discography. Czerwi's music has appeared many times on Polish and European radio stations, and each time it is met with a very warm reception, both from listeners and critics. The last time the Szczecin Philharmonic hosted artists during the pandemic was in May 2020, when the musicians played for the silent film Metropolis , directed by Fritz Lang. 1927

The group currently consists of four musicians: Wojtek Zaborowski, Maciek Kudłacik, Paweł Zawarus, Piotrek Bogunia, who use in their work, among others, ethnic instruments, xylophone and many other percussion instruments, bass, guitar, mandolin, accordion, and synthesisers.

The Czerwie band will be accompanied by the West Side Sinfonietta - a joint initiative of musicians from the National Forum of Music in Wrocław and the Philharmonic. Mieczysław Karłowicz in Szczecin. Instrumentalists from both outstanding institutions from western Poland exchange diverse artistic experiences. The orchestra is not traditionally led by a conductor, but by violinists: Marcin Danilewski and Paweł Maślanka, who, together with the excellent double bassist Jacek Sosna, form the core of the band. The ensemble's repertoire is very wide, and the music of Viennese composers has a special place in it.
