Cine-concert: Un chien andalou & L'âge d'or
Brussels Philharmonic conducted by Vincent De Kort - Bozar, Henry Le Boeuf Hall

Program Info:
Bozar celebrates 100 years of surrealism with an exhibition about the famous avant-garde movement in Belgium - Brussels Philharmonic celebrates with this special cinema concert that brings together two iconic films by Luis Buñuel.

-----

Spanish director Luis Buñuel, together with Salvador Dalí, created the first surrealist masterpiece in film history: Un chien andalou . A seemingly randomly edited series of scenes provokes the audience - the surrealist mentality par excellence. The first images are immediately striking: a man sharpens his razor, goes outside on the balcony and looks longingly at the night sky. As a small cloud passes over the full moon, the man brutally stabs a young woman in the eye. The subsequent visually dramatic scenes provoke and fascinate at the same time, while Buñuel denies the viewer any support or orientation.

This exercise was followed by a full-fledged work a year later: L'Age d'or . This time Buñuel tells the surreal story of a man and a woman who are passionately in love with each other, but their attempts to consummate their love are thwarted by family, the church and bourgeois society. The controversy continued, the scandal engulfed Paris. Buñuel published a statement in the Heraldo de Aragón of July 1930: “This film is a moral scandal, a revolution that will tackle the bad habits of society in conflict with nature.”
