Orchestre Colonne - La Seine Musicale
Program Info: Invited to New York to guide the first steps of the brand new Conservatory of Music, Dvořák realised that the American people still had everything to build: their art, their heritage. In a brilliant intuition, he suggested that young American composers rely on popular music, that from Native American and Afro-American cultures.
In a way, by imposing jazz in concert halls, Gershwin followed the path suggested by his illustrious elder: in February 1924, Rhapsody in Blue triumphed at the Aeolian Hall in New York. Two orchestrations coexist: the one – original for piano and jazz band – from 1924, then a second from 1942 when Ferdé Grofé, in memory of his friend's wishes, offered this Rhapsody an expanded symphonic setting.
At the end of the 1950s, jazz – already present on the stages of Broadway – was enriched with new urban rhythms: Juliet was now called Maria, Romeo became Tony, and Leonard Bernstein set the Winter Garden Theater ablaze with his West Side Story which sounded like an explosion.
