Hocus Pocus: Magical Music
Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Steven Karidoyanes - Plymouth Memorial Hall
Program Info: Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra Steven Karidoyanes, conductor South Shore Conservatory Youth Concerto Competition winner
Broomsticks. Bassoons. Bedlam! When this fun and fanciful score about a lazy apprentice and an enchanted-broomstick-gone-wild premiered in 1897, it catapulted the composer into overnight stardom. A few decades and several abracadabras later, the 1940 Disney film Fantasia made The Sorcerer’s Apprentice one of the most iconic pieces of orchestral music today. Then, with another tap of the wand, we’re off on a wild ride to an icy planet that seems to somersault through space. There, Holst unleashes all his orchestral tricks—trumpets, trombones, tubas, timpani, and those spell-binding strings —to show us the full power of the mighty Magician, Uranus. Yes, friends, there’s magic in the air. And watch very closely. Our Music Director has a few more musical tricks (and cards) up his tuxedo sleeve.
Program: John Williams - Music from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Paul Dukas - The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Gustav Holst - Uranus, the Magician from The Planets
