Sheffield International Concert
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Eduardo Strausser - Sheffield City Hall, Oval Hall
Program Info: City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Eduardo Strausser, conductor Jess Gillam, saxophone
The charismatic Brazilian conductor, Eduardo Strausser, leads the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in its long-awaited return to Sheffield, opening the concert with Rossini’s Overture to his fairy-tale opera Cinderella.
The trailblazing saxophonist and BBC Radio 3 presenter, Jess Gillam, joins them for another very welcome appearance, performing Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos’s dance-driven, miniature saxophone concerto, Fantasia and John Williams’s jazz-inspired Escapades, from Steven Spielberg’s 2002 film Catch Me If You Can. Two suites complete the programme: Rimsky-Korsakov’s comedic, Oriental-influenced opera The Golden Cockerel and Stravinsky’s magical ballet The Firebird.
