Film Symphonic - Joker
Nationaal Orkest van Belgie conducted by Dirk Brossé - Bozar, Henry Le Boeuf Hall

Program Info:
Hildur Guðnadótti - The Joker

The psychological thriller Joker was without a doubt one of the most memorable films of the year 2019. The unique origin story surrounding Arthur Fleck, who eventually becomes the psychopathic supervillain who terrorises Gotham City, has delighted friends and foes of the Batman universe.

That has everything to do with the phenomenal acting performance of Joaquin Phoenix. In a deeply human way, he plays the character of Arthur Fleck, a marginalised individual who slowly but surely slides into delusion. An important reason for this is the discontinuation of his health care – a drastic cost-cutting measure. The absurd and nihilistic actions of the former clinic clown, who can't control his laughter, soon become the source of inspiration for many popular protests - until everything gets terribly out of hand.

The music of Joker , which will be performed live by the Belgian National Orchestra conducted by Dirk Brossé, was written by the Icelandic composer and classical cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir. Her own instrument, the cello, plays the title character, while the orchestra symbolises the madness that rises in the head of the purple-yellow horror clown: first slumbering in the background, then getting louder and finally completely engulfing the cello. For the
's soundtrack, Joker Hildur Guðnadóttir, who also wrote the music for the acclaimed mini-series Chernobyl at the same time , received numerous awards, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.
