Der heilige Berg - Music and Film
hr-Sinfonieorchester (Hesschischen Rundfunk) conducted by Frank Strobel - hr-Sendesaal
Program Info: Edmund Meisel - Der heilige Berg (The Holy mountain)
Arnold Fanck's famous 1926 silent film classic with the reconstructed original accompanying music by Edmund Meisel
This dramatic mountain film about the friendship of two mountaineers who fall in love with the same woman captivates with its unique images. Starring Leni Riefenstahl, Ernst Petersen and Luis Trenker, it was shot by mountain film pioneer Arnold Fanck with state-of-the-art camera technology amidst ice and snow. The exterior shots were made in the Swiss Alps. It took film architect Leopold Blonder four weeks to erect the 16-meter-high central »Ice Palace« alone. When shooting was delayed and temperatures rose, it threatened to melt and ultimately had to be rebuilt. With its atmospheric backlit shots, its idiosyncratic montage and its acrobatic performances by the actors and athletes, the film satisfies the movie-going public's need for entertainment as well as its desire to watch and shudder. In this concert, the film can be experienced again for the first time with its impressive original music by Edmund Meisel, once considered avant-garde, which is currently being reconstructed on behalf of ZDF/ARTE and the Murnau Foundation and recorded by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony in this context.
