Orchestra concert in the Great Festival Hall

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov enjoyed exploring the Orient and created a lasting symphonic monument to Princess Scheherazade, who saved herself from a thousand and one life-threatening nights with adventurous stories; a sounding novel this is, with unforgettable motifs. The tour guide is the Finn Santtu-Matias Rouvali, one of the great conductors of the younger generation. He conducts the well-travelled and famous Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, of which he is chief conductor. Arabella Steinbacher is a world-class violinist and has one of the greatest violin concertos of the 20th century, that of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, in her luggage. We embark on a sonic and melodious journey into the "tonal modern age" - and also a little into the world of legendary Hollywood films. The magnificent overture of this concert, which praises the sun god Helios by the great Dane Carl Nielsen, fits in with this.

Carl Nielsen - Helios Overture, op. 17
Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Concerto for violin and orchestra, D major, op. 35, the concerto has themes from the scores for the movies ANOTHER DAWN (1937), ANTHONY ADVERSE (1936) & THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (1937)
Nikolai Rumsky-Korsakov - "Scheherazade", Symphonic Suite for Orchestra, Op. 35
