Michel van der Aa - The Book of Water Chamber music theater for one actor, string quartet and film based on the short story »Man appears in the Holocene« (in English translation) by Max Frisch Composition commissioned by Venice Biennale, Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, Cologne Philharmonic (KölnMusik), Ensemble Modern, Amsterdam Sinfonietta and November Music German premiere
Cut off from the outside world and threatened by an environmental catastrophe, a man literally struggles to regain his composure. Geiser, as he is called, is trying to put his life in order and make the changing of the times understandable. The chamber music theater by Michel van der Aa evokes a menacing atmosphere.
In »The Book of Water« (after Max Frisch), the Dutch composer Michel van der Aa describes a man's attempts to put his life in order. He is cut off from the outside world by an environmental catastrophe caused by masses of water. Thrown back on himself, he begins to record his thoughts in the style of an encyclopedia. But the project eludes him, structures of memory and knowledge dissolve altogether. The Book of Water intensely conjures up the threat of memory loss and personality dissolution.
