Michael Nyman's The Piano
Hour Glass Ensemble - Sydney Opera House, Utzon Room
This concert has been canceled.
Program Info: Hourglass Ensemble presents the iconic Nyman soundtrack, exploring the intense magic of the ocean with beautiful, spiritual music, including Ravel and three world premieres by Australians Smith, Grantham, and Rosiak.
Australia - the island nation. Settled by boat for milennia, shaped by our vast, inescapably wild and beautiful oceans.
Sydney’s Hourglass Ensemble presents a brilliant reimagining of the intense and spellbinding soundtrack to Jane Campion’s iconic movie “The Piano”, with two other sparkling and surreal commissions inspired by our coastal landscapes.
Nyman’s unique minimalist style of film composition is revived and invigorated by Richard Grantham, speaking to all Australians of journeys of both the body and the heart from our homelands across the world.
Our culture, society, and the very rocks are influenced by the sea – and so are our artistists and musicians inspired by our coastline and dreams of travel. Margery Smith’s ethereal music for Port Phillip speaks to all Australians about enduring isolation whilst falling in love with the ocean anew each day.
Proud Polish immigrant Michal Rosiak takes us to our distant territories to the south with Glaciers, depicting the bracing cold, solemnity, crashing ice floes, and the quirky antics of penguins.
