Music to live, to survive and even to die: from Psalm 114 by Mendelssohn that sings of the liberation of the people of Israel narrated in the Book of Exodus to the horror of the Holocaust with the premiere of the work by Alejandro Vivas entitled Homenaje a Ilse Weber , in I remember the lullaby with whom this composer wrapped her son and other children when they were taken to the gas chamber. Another lucky man was Erich Wolfgang Korngold , who escaped Nazi persecution in Vienna thanks to a timely trip to the United States to score the film The Adventures of Robin Hood . The program includes Finland , Sibelius which reinforced nationalist sentiment as the country struggled to free itself from the Russian Empire, and ends with the well-known Jazz Suite No. 2 , actually Suite for a Variety Orchestra , by Dmitri Shostakovich , a surviving Soviet musician. to the arbitrary trials of the Stalin regime, which sometimes praised him and others condemned him.
