Mahler's "Fourth" Intense
Orchestre Symphonique de Québec conducted by Bramwell Tovey - Palais Montcalm

Program Info:
Orchestre Symphonique de Québec
Bramwell Tovey, conductor
Timothy Chooi, violin
Helene Guilmette, soprano

This concert tinged with a breath of Viennese romanticism presents two masterful works by great Austrian composers: Korngold and Mahler. Composed in 1945 in a neo-classical vein, Violin Concerto is a majestic work in which the composer borrows thematic material from the music he composed for three films during the 1930s. With his Stradivarius, the dazzling Timothy Chooi pays tribute to him.

Hélène Guilmette, Quebec soprano with a warm timbre, lends her voice to Fourth Symphony , written for voice and orchestra. This work, which is inspired by the joys of childhood and exudes transparency and lightness, is one of Mahler's symphonies most appreciated by the public. Beneath the apparent naivety of the symphony, however, lugubrious, even satanic colors persist. We will hear, among other things, the solo violin tuned to a higher pitch in the second movement, leaving echoes of a danse macabre…

Erich Wolfgang Korngold: Violin Concerto, the concerto has themes from the scores for the movies ANOTHER DAWN (1937), ANTHONY ADVERSE (1936) & THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER (1937)
Gustav Mahler: Symphonie no 4
