Escape to Paradise, Los Angeles 1943
Chamber Quintet - Église de Verbier
Program Info: Daniel Hope, violin Lawrence Power, viola Sheku Kanneh-Mason, cello Thomas Hampson, baritone Julien Quentin, piano
Some of the most iconic film scores of the 20th century were penned by composers who fled fascist persecution and relocated in Los Angeles. Daniel Hope’s extensive research into their music is explored in this concert, also starring Thomas Hampson and Sheku Kanneh-Mason.
Escape to Paradise, Los Angeles 1943 is a follow-up to Daniel Hope’s Berlin 1938 music theatre project for the 2019 Verbier Festival. Mirroring the format of that successful evening, it presents the music of composers who took refuge in Los Angeles during World War Two, together with poetry and prose readings, as it illustrates not simply the music that arose from this time and place, but also the other art that influenced it.
