Of the many approaches to the use of music in film one of the most intriguing and emotionally powerful is to be found in the world of film noir. Miles Davis' stunning score to Louis Malle's 1958 classic Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Elevator To The Gallows); Ellington's treatment of Otto Preminger's 1959 Anatomy of a Murder; Mancini's haunting accompaniment to Orson Welles' 1958 A Touch of Evil. Then there are the standout songs and instrumentals which have become almost inextricably bound to that scene, that character: "Laura", "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine", "It's A Blue World", "I've Got You", "She's Funny That Way".
