With A Smile
Chaplin’s World in Concert
(with film clips)

Chaplin films enchant and touch us: we laugh, smile, always with a melancholy tear in our eyes. This freestyle concert takes you deep into the multifaceted world of Chaplin. "With A Smile" is a collage that combines Chaplin's music and selected film sequences as well as documentary material from the Chaplin archives - artistic and at the same time highly entertaining. At the conductor's desk: film music expert Frank Strobel.

Chaplin and his wonderful music

The films by the ingenious comedian and artist Charlie Chaplin have their very own atmosphere, which is also and above all created by the wonderful music that Chaplin mostly contributed himself. Supported by arrangers and staff, the musical autodidact succeeded in creating soundscapes that open up their own emotional level to the comedic, the tragic, the pathos and the intimate moments of his films. Just think of his music for films like "The Gold Rush", "City Lights", "The Great Dictator" or "Modern Times", with the famous "Smile" melody in the final scene. All of this can be seen in this concert and experiencing the music live, as Chaplin himself said: "Nothing is more exciting than hearing a self-composed melody played for the first time by a 50-man orchestra."
A Chaplin portrait "with a smile"

This evening is full of emotional music, fascinating films and pictures - and at the same time becomes an impressive and always "with a smile" portrait of Chaplin as a person and musician, as a social critic and humanist. Definitely worth seeing and hearing, not only for Chaplin fans.
