12 November 2017 Berlin (Germany)
Red Commotion: Arsenal (Ukraine 1929)
Orchestra of the Komische Oper Berlin conducted by Frank Strobel - Komische Oper Berlin
Program Info: The Russian Revolution, whose 100th anniversary falls in 2017, forms the historic backdrop to the feature film of the second evening. The Ukrainian soldier Timosh returns to Kiev after the First World War bearing not only physical and psychological scars, but also all manner of revolutionary ideas, which quickly spread in his home city and especially at the »Arsenal« weapons factory.
The introductory programme represents a physical manifestation of the revolutionary zeitgeist of the 1910s and 1920s. The opening film, Interplanetary Revolution, tells of the export of revolution to Mars; Dziga Vertov’s Kino-Pravda evokes the October Revolution; and last but not least, Sergei Eisenstein surprises with a surreal piece of grotesquery. And in between: Eisler songs and the – communally sung – Internationale. Eccentrics of the world, unite.
